Ken Rockwell recently published one of the first user reviews of the Coolpix P7000. He likes it and finds that if performs favorably compared to the Canon G12.
Much to my surprise, the P7000 is a very good camera, better in some ways than the G12, in more than just zoom range.

Nikon has just announced a new high-end Coolpix camera, intended to compete with other high-end compact cameras such as the Canon Powershot G11 and Panasonic LX-series. The new Coolpix P7000 offers a compact alternative to DSLR cameras with features appealing to more advanced users, semi-pros and even pro photograpers. This is an important model for Nikon and it replaces previous Nikon efforts such as the P6000 and P5100, hoping to deliver against its rivals where previous models have had limited success.
The P7000 will be available in late September 2010 for a suggested retail price of $499.95 US. It offers the following main features:
Nikon's latest Coolpix model offers an improved internal projector that can project both still images and movies from either the camera or a computer connected to the camera via USB.
